Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn has announced he will retire from Congress at the end of its current term instead of serving out his full six-year term to 2016. Coburn put out an official statement announcing his resignation, and he addresses battle with cancer, but says in the statement that his decision to step down is not about his personal health problems. Coburn says in his statement that he always intended to serve just two terms in the Senate, because “our founders saw public service and politics as a calling rather than a career.” Before being elected to the Senate in 2004, he served just three terms in the House of Representatives, from 1994 to 2000.
